On December 10, 1983 Joyce Harris-Wright convened the first meeting of the
Jamaica Nurses Association at her home. There were 13 other nurses present. Ms.
Harris-Wright was elected President and Beverly Grant, Vice President. These
founding members committed to the cause of assisting fellow Jamaican Nurses in
easing the transition to the United States regarding migration, licensing, education
and other issues.
A structural professional association evolved in 1984 with the adoption of Bylaws
and Registration of Articles of Incorporation as a not for profit organization 501
(c) (6). Just recently, JNAF has been granted a 501(c)3 status by the IRS (all
donations to the Association are now fully tax deductible).
The history of the first 20 years of the Association (1983-2003) is in print and
available.
Presidents to date have been:
Joyce Harris-Wright 1985, 1990, 1991, 1997

Joy Lewis 1988, 1989

Over the years, JNAF has strived to maintain the ideals and ideas of the founding
members, widened the scope of its function, still embracing the motto adopted in 1984,
